Education Impact

Whilst food rescue feeds hungry people, education transforms lives.  Our education pillar is focused on creating positive change from inspiring future change-makers with FEAST, improving food security and life skills with NEST and creating a better future for vulnerable young people with Nourish.

After the disruption of COVID, our educators were delighted to be back to face-to-face learning in classrooms, kitchens, and communities across the country, changing the way people think about food, promoting healthy eating and strengthening community connections.

FEAST

inspiring future change-makers in the classroom

Our curriculum-aligned education program FEAST is now well established nationally with a great uptake by primary schools in WA and growth across all other states. In July, students at Mt Eliza Primary School finally helped us officially launch the program in Victoria. The High School pilot ran successfully in 13 schools and will be rolled out in 2023, with 200 high schools already enrolled.

FEAST is a catalyst for many conversations about what the next generation can do to protect our planet. Through learning about the impact of the food we waste at home, to creating their own recipes to waste less, their newfound knowledge inspires young people to become the future change-makers we need!

NEST

community connection through cooking and sharing a meal

NEST brings people together from different backgrounds, circumstances, ages and nationalities, hosted by our team of trained nutritionists and dieticians. The group sessions are run in fun and friendly environments where we teach simple, healthy cooking on a budget. The real impact is when we sit down to share a meal together and have conversations about the positive change NEST makes to people’s lives in so many lasting ways.

This is why it was so important to get back to face-to-face NEST sessions in all six locations – Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle and Sydney.  The team also ran successful pilots in regional areas and a NEST Youth program for 14-18 year olds.

After my wife died, I relied a lot on frozen and canned food from the supermarket as I had no idea how to cook. NEST gave me new found skills and I can now make minestrone soup from scratch

Nourish

Life-changing skills through hospitality training

Nourish is a special journey we share with ‘at risk’ young people aged 16-25. We often see a life-changing transformation as students combine new skills with long-lasting friendships.

The team were delighted to return to teaching a full program in Adelaide, Newcastle and Sydney and proudly watched 50 students graduate with a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations. A full year with a dedicated Youth Worker in each location has lifted our care and support for students past and present to new levels.

New industry partnerships boosted post-program pathways and the transition into employment. Community connections have grown thanks to Nourish Newcastle’s Garden project, which featured regular input from local Aboriginal groups.

Before Nourish, I couldn’t function socially and now people notice me for being personable. It taught me the foundations needed to live and now I have a job as a barista.
